Liter of Light: sustainable illumination
According to statistics, almost one in four people worldwide have no electric power. Sika takes responsibility and provides products and know-how for the NPO Liter of Light in order to give light to socially deprived people.
Life in darkness
Just think what it would be like to live without electric lights – something people trapped in poverty have to deal with every day. Imagine living in the dark inside your own apartment and never being able to see anything when you get there. Without electricity they are at a disadvantage in virtually every aspect of their lives. They are unable to preserve food or pump safe water and have no access to radio or TV. Even a simple thing such as charging a cell phone becomes a major task. And productive work is limited to outdoor activities during the daytime, because all these households still continue to live in darkness.

THE LITER OF LIGHT NIGERIA
Enriched Foundation is spearheading the Liter of Light project in Nigeria, looking at different ways to touch lives of Nigerians in the four corners of the Nation namely the North, South, East and West, making sure we deploy the solar bulbs to homes in the rural areas of Nigeria were they have been deprived of electricity.
Eric Jindu the Executive Director of the foundation as lined out different metrics to be deployed to achieve success in the foundation’s vision to achieve 250,000 homes being lighted in 2013.Talks are ongoing with sponsors and Governors of some States who have shown keen interest to be a part of the revolution and project.
About A Liter of Light
A Liter of Light, Enriched Hands Foundation’s latest venture, is a sustainable lighting project which aims to bring the eco-friendly Solar Bottle Bulb to disprivileged communities nationwide. Designed and developed by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Solar Bottle Bulb is based on the principles of Appropriate Technologies – a concept that provides simple and easily replicable technologies that address basic needs in developing communities. A Liter of Light is a program inspired by many innovations from around the world.
The Technology
What do you get with sunshine and an old plastic bottle filled with water and chlorine? Thanks to Alfred Moser and a group of MIT students, you get a 55-watt solar bulb that refracts sunlight! It’s powerful enough to light up a home but more than that it’s environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and easy to make.
The Future
Enriched Hands Foundation is relying on Sponsors and volunteers like you to spread the Liter of Light movement where it’s needed. Using the Nigeria as our home base, we want one million bottle lights installed around the world by 2015.
THE PROJECT.
Do you know that millions of families still live in the dark? Enriched Hands aims to brighten up one million homes in Nigeria by 2013.
Informal settlements are high-risk areas, since the BFP does not conduct fire hazard inspections in these communities. Enriched Hands envisions sharing to underprivileged communities an economically- and ecologically-sustainable source of light that will provide an immediate solution to our fellowmen’s problems.
About Enriched Hands Foundation
Enriched Hands Foundation was established by Eric Jindu to create a system of sustainability and reliability through its capability-building and employment-generating projects. Introducing groundbreaking social enterprise, appropriate technologies, and alternative construction in Nigeria, This is one of the first programme we are pioneering in Nigeria on Light. We believe green technology is for everyone. Unfortunately, it’s only accessible to those who can afford it. That’s why the foundation is taking sustainable building solutions to the grassroots level—the people who are in most need of low-cost infrastructures. These ideas are easily replicable, scalable, and of course, only use materials that are sourced from local communities.
